New Construction Gets Chester County Charm
Incorporating historical elements in to a design adds character and charm to the typically blank, sterile quality of new construction. The inspiration for finishing this basement was the barn and horse pasture that the Chester County property overlooks. To highlight the setting and create an aged, timeworn feel, the design features reclaimed wood, stacked stone, and live edge wood to contrast the neutral light gray walls and white built-in cabinetry.
Natural Elements
Reclaimed Wood
-Three ceiling beams were constructed using 125 year-old, barn wood roof boards. The beams infuse character and also break up the drywall in the large space.
- In place of traditional hinged doors, two sliding barn doors leading into storage areas were fabricated. The wood doors provide warmth and personality, while also increasing the usable space in the room.
-A rough-hewn wood mantle over the fireplace, floating shelves in the powder room, and a drink rail in the gaming area add to the rustic, weathered feel.
Stacked Stone
- The focal point of the space is a light, warm-toned stone fireplace, which offers texture and creates a cozy, inviting atmosphere.
- Accent walls of stacked stone in the bar area and powder room provide additional texture and interest and reinforce a feeling of history.
Live Edge
- A handcrafted thick chestnut slab bar top brings drama to the bar area and embraces the home's natural backdrop.
